Why is My Check Engine Light On?

Why is My Check Engine Light On?

So your check engine light just came on, now what?  These are some tips to help determine whether your vehicle has major engine problems or just a loose gas cap.

We have all had it happen before where we are driving along and notice something yellow, out of the corner of our eye.  A quick glace confirms it.  The dreaded check engine light!  If you are like most car owners, you are not sure if you should panic or not, and you really don't know what the light is trying to tell you or how you should react.

The often misunderstood check engine light can mean many different things from a misfiring engine to a loose gas cap.  The first thing to check is whether the light is flashing or solid.  If the light is solid then the car is still perfectly safe to drive but you do want to get it in as soon as possible to have it checked out.  If the light is flashing, it indicates a more serious problem and you do want to pull over to the side of the road as so as it is safe and call road side assistance or a tow truck.

In any case if the light is on, it is time to schedule a service for your car.  Our factory trained technicians with their specialized machines can easily check and diagnose what is behind your light, at a cost that is nearly always lower then a private garage.

Although serious problems can cause your check engine light to come on, there are lots of other lights on your dash that are designed to indicate more serious problems such as overheating or oil pressure.

A good rule of thumb is, if the light is solid yellow then the car is still drivable but does need to be checked out a soon as possible.  If the light is flashing and/or red, then pull over and have the car towed.  Further driving could cause more damage or even become a safety hazard.
